What do you do when a worldwide pandemic forces you to cancel a beloved community event? Move it online, of course!
Idler’s Home, longtime vendor of appliances and furniture on the Central Coast, did just that with their 36th annual Apple Pie Contest. But rather than making this year’s event an actual competition, they’ve turned it into a community-building experience.
Idler’s recently worked with Verdin to develop a motion graphic calling on local residents to make the most of the shelter-in-place order by baking a pie at home. They then opened it up to the community at large by encouraging people to share recipes, photos and videos on social media using #idlershomeapplepie.
Verdin also experienced some unique challenges while creating this motion graphic due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We couldn’t stage a photo shoot, so our design team looked for high-quality stock footage that captured the warm spirit of Idler’s and the apple pie contest.
“I’ve heard from a lot of people that this whole situation has forced a slower or more old fashioned way of life,” Art Director Megan Condict said. Even though we’re all using a lot of technology, we’re also baking more and spending more time in the kitchen together with loved ones.”
That slower way of life is shown in the closeups of rolling out homemade dough and parents helping their children through the baking process.
“It feels very homey,” Condict said. “The kitchen is a nice, cozy backdrop for making memories.”
