Literacy for Life, formerly known as the San Luis Obispo Literacy Council, is a non-profit organization that assists adult learners in developing English language communication skills. Through volunteer tutors, Literacy for Life provides learners with individualized instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and basic number skills. Literacy for Life helps the estimated 25,000 non-literate adults in San Luis Obispo County develop lifelong skills that impact everyday life.
Founded in 1982, Literacy for Life provides hundreds of learners each year the opportunity to gain independence and chart a path to success. A variety of techniques and materials are offered to meet each learner’s specific needs. Literacy for Life has an English as a Second Language program to benefit those who understand little English and must be taught to read, write and speak. For native English speakers, the English Literacy program assists those who struggle to read or write.
Long-lasting relationships are formed through the pairing of volunteer tutors with student learners. Volunteers must have a clear knowledge of the English language and complete a training workshop. Each student-tutor match is carefully selected by a coordinator to best fit both individuals.
