“Back to school” is here – in our email inboxes, in our stores, and all over our Facebook feeds. Cuesta classes are already underway and Cal Poly is gearing up for day one on September 21. For all students, the next few weeks are full of changes and new beginnings – and for students moving into an off-campus neighborhood, one of the biggest changes is becoming a part of a brand new community.
In the spirit of the new school year, we’ve teamed up with the Office of Neighborhood Services to put together a few tips for students as you get settled into your new digs:
-
Recognize that you’re part of a unique community.
Take advantage of it by getting to know your neighbors. The school year flies by all too often, so be proactive in making the most of these new relationships.
-
Respect your unique community.
Understand that many of your neighbors may be in a different stage of life than you. When inviting large groups of people over, be careful of your neighbors’ property and aware of your noise level.
-
Research the rules of your neighborhood.
Don’t let a lack of knowledge lead to a parking ticket your first week. Find out the rules that apply to your street, as well as other relevant information about where you live. (What water restrictions apply to you? When should you put your trash can on the curb? We’d recommend not learning these lessons the hard way.)
-
Remember that you share your neighborhood with others.
Be alert every time you travel through your neighborhood and on the lookout for small children and pets.
-
Realize that small incidents can have lasting damage.
Unfortunately, no one is invincible and mistakes, both large and small, can have serious consequences. Be mindful of your actions and how they affect those around you.
