It’s no secret that San Luis Obispo County has a housing issue. The area is one of abundant beauty and hosts a large college campus. These factors make housing more competitive, more expensive, and oftentimes completely unaffordable for lower income residents. The Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo (HASLO) has been dedicated to tackling this issue by helping low income citizens secure affordable, secure housing in San Luis Obispo County.
This year HASLO is celebrating 50 years in operation serving the community! HASLO was established in 1968 by a group of community volunteers concerned about uneven housing with a goal to help low income citizens secure long-term housing. Today, HASLO provides housing services to over 3,000 households a month.
HASLO prides their organization for being innovative, professional, and responsive. They are always proactively working towards new housing solutions for low income residents. HASLO also offers programs for vulnerable populations such as Veterans, the Homeless, and special needs clients.
Recently HASLO has completed development on several affordable apartments such as 860 on the Wye, with 20 permanently affordable apartments for formerly homeless veterans. They also developed the Bishop Street Studios in collaboration with Transitions Mental Health, creating 34 apartments with supportive services for mental health clients.
Throughout HASLO’s 50 years they have been appreciated and recognized on a local and national level. In 2014 they achieved the National Award of Excellence from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials and the High Performer Award from U.S. Department of Housing and Community Development in 2017.
The Verdin team is honored to be working with this great organization and wishes them many more successful years!
