Show your Love for Mom with a Heart-Healthy Mother’s Day!
Our friends at Dignity Health are always trying to provide both patients and the local community with more information on how to lead a long and healthy life. On their behalf, we wanted to share some ideas for ways you can celebrate Mother’s Day while supporting your mom’s health.
Hike and Picnic
Is there anything better than a spring hike in the beautiful Central Coast area? The greatest gift you can give Mom is to spend some quality time with the family. So head into the great outdoors and explore the local trails like Johnson Ranch or one of the many paths in Montaña de Oro. You can even pack a picnic to enjoy halfway through your walk. Bonus points if that picnic boasts some tea, heart-healthy nuts, veggies and fruits!
Wine Tasting
We know this one seems counterintuitive. But, the good news is that red wine is shockingly good for your heart! The skin and seeds of red grapes contain antioxidants, called flavonoids, which can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and blood clotting. A nice wine tasting trip could be a perfect way to enjoy time with Mom, and maybe even justify one extra glass of your favorite local Pinot Noir.
Breakfast in Bed
Let’s face it – most moms could really use a day of relaxation. Surprise her with a simple, low-key breakfast in bed! Brew a nice cup of coffee, cut up a bowl of fruit, and prepare some oatmeal. Both coffee and oatmeal are heart-healthy foods because they lower bad cholesterol. You can also spruce up the breakfast with some fresh flowers
Bike Ride
Enjoy a leisurely bike ride—we recommend the Bob Jones Bike Trail. It runs from the 101 to Avila Beach. You’ll cruise past beautiful gardens, streams and feel the refreshing ocean breeze on your face. Then, treat yourselves to a big seafood lunch in Avila – seafood is notoriously nutrient-rich and fish is a great source of protein.
We hope you like some of these ideas, but whatever you decide to do for Mother’s Day this year, the most important thing is to show Mom you love her. Nothing is better for a mother’s heart than her child’s love.
